What was John Lennon’s FIRST guitar? (Red Acoustic)?
Just curious what John’s First guitar was. (I know he started on banjo)
The guitar (most likely a reproduction) is also seen in the movie Nowhere Boy. What is the make and model? Obviously it wasnt a great guitar, but id love to atleast see what they sell for. Thanks!!
a Gallotone Champion guitar seems to ring a bell, but I might not have my facts straight. but at least you can start googling with that. One source says, “Lennon bought this 3/4-size guitar by mail for about £10 after seeing an advertisement in Reveille magazine. Made by the Gallo company of South Africa, it was “Guaranteed Not to Split.” ”
The guitar, which was auctioned together with the trunk it sat in for years, now sports a brass plaque Mimi (John’s aunt) had mounted on the headstock memorializing her advice to the young, guitar-happy Lennon: “Remember, you’ll never earn your living by it.”
An anonymous bidder later identified as a “private collector” named Adam Sender got it for £155,000 (about $250,000). In the fall of 2000 this guitar went on display at Boston’s Museum of Fine Art.

1,000 Kisses $9.99 Patty Griffin’s third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it’s sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cin? ma v? rit? mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album’s production style is subtle, it’s also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of “Chief” to the Latin romanticism of “Mil Besos” to the torchy late-night blues of “Tomorrow Night” without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1,000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer (her version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Stolen Car” actually improves on “the Boss”‘ original), and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow’s lament “Making Pies” and the moody lead-off track “Rain.” And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin’s voice — a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability — remains a wonder to behold. 1,000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don’t have to wait four years for the follow-up. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Singer/guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski operate out of an acoustic setting but their mellow yet hooky tunes have more in common with indie rock outfits than folky troubadours. This Portland, OR-based group winds up being something like Beck or the Shins doing easygoing folksy tunes or Iron & Wine with a poppier sensibility. Whatever genre equation you want to use to describe them, it’s easy to say that Blind Pilot have come up with a winning music plan. The opening tune “Oviedo” sets the course that they chart throughout the debut full-length. Against some laid-back guitar strumming and gentle drumming, Nebeker warmly sings his hazy but quirky lyrics, which seem like private language of personal confessions (“Four times is once too much for luck and that’s how many times the clock struck/I wandered home saying your name”). As the song easies along, the arrangement gets fleshed out with muted horns and banjo picking. Nebeker nicely doubles his voice at times, but his singing maintains his intimate, hushed tones. In “Paint or Pollen,” he builds a set of beguiling images (“Milk in your water, black in your primer, wood in your brush”) to express that “the best is upon us.” While having an interesting way with words, Nebeker isn’t one for direct sentiment. He is a bit more overt in his affection on the title track, where he sings “My eyes were dark ’till you woke me.” While “The Bitter End” deals with death, it doesn’t dip heavily in morbidity as Nebeker expresses his emotions through personal but semi-obscure references to “hounds-tooth coats and vitamins.” For all of its off-the-cuff musical vibe, Blind Pilot also exhibits a fine sense of craftsmanship. The vibraphone that weaves through “One Red Thread” subtly expands the song’s sonic landscape while subdued horns show up again to bolster the woozy melody in “I Buried a Bone.” “Two Towns fro… |

3D $17.98 When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. Alison Brown Quartet $11.99 Alison Brown, believe it or not, is a five-string banjo player. The rest of her quartet is a standard jazz ensemble consisting of piano, bass, and drums, and you can be confident that there’s nary a bluegrass lick anywhere on this album. Like her compadre B? la Fleck (to whom she must be absolutely sick of being compared), Brown figured out some time ago that the banjo is a fully chromatic instrument with every bit as much melodic flexibility as a guitar, and that its clear, crisp tone is perfectly suited to jazz. It works especially well as a bebop instrument, which Brown demonstrates on this album’s opening track, the rollicking, Charlie Parker-ish “G Bop.” It also works pretty well as a cool jazz instrument, which Brown demonstrates on the album’s second track, the loping, Bill Evans-ish “Red Balloon.” This sort of stylistic variety is grist for Brown’s mill, but it doesn’t always work in her favor: “My Favorite Marsha” (one of several tracks on which she switches to guitar) is nice but borders on new acoustic sappiness — her guitar playing is good but not exceptional. Brothers of the Dirt $16.98 With his shaved head, full beard, gold earring, and arms full of tattoos, Brandon Jenkins looks more like an outlaw biker than a country singer, but a country singer is what he is. He’s one of the artists associated with the Red Dirt movement of Oklahoma, a genre of country music that also draws on rock, blues, swing, and honky tonk, often with a radical political edge that would be anathema to many mainstream Nashville artists. The Oklahoma-born, Austin, TX-based musician lives for the road and his endless touring helped him develop a razor-sharp guitar sound and a booming vocal style that can cut through the noise of a Saturday night barroom. Brothers of the Dirt is dedicated to Bob Childers, the songwriter credited with founding the Red Dirt Movement, and it’s full of the blood-and-guts songwriting that has made Jenkins legendary in the Texas/Oklahoma area. The anti-Iraq war tune “Blood for Oil” opens the album with a bang, indicting America for its dependence on foreign oil and questioning the death of average guys for the profit of the big corporations. Jenkins growls his protest while his clanging guitar sounds the alarm. “Marching Toward the Guns” is a country-blues with a jubilant fatalism that pays tribute to the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. “Out of Babylon” borrows Biblical (and Rastafarian) imagery for another apocalyptic lament. Jenkins is also adept at old-fashioned, apolitical country tunes. “White Van Blues” is the hard luck tale of a touring musician full of hyperbolic humor, driven by Jenkins’ screaming guitar and Jesse Frost’s powerhouse drumming. Catch the Moon [CD/DVD] $13.98 Folkie Lisa Loeb has followed the lead of other adult music artists (including Kenny Loggins and her co-pilot on this album, Elizabeth Mitchell) in making a disc of children’s music that can be enjoyed by all ages. Some of the songs are lyrically pitched exclusively to the toddlers (e.g., the traditional number “Little Red Caboose” and the traditional adaptation of”Big Rock Candy Mountain”) while others are a tad more sophisticated (a nicely revamped version of “Oh Susanna” and a lovely take on Bob Dylan’s “New Morning”). Then there is the laudable ethnic content: “La Manita” (Spanish traditional), “Donguri/Rolling Acorn” (Japanese traditional), and “Fais Do Do” (French traditional). The original song “Stop and Go” is a “rocky” participation number and tons of fun, while “Catch the Moon” (also original) is dreamily poetic. And there’s never been a more tender version of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” than the one found here. The songs are rendered in a folk/country acoustic minimalism that is, in a word, enchanting. And the CD comes encased in a children’s board book written by Erin Courtney and illustrated by Bonnie Brooke Mitchell. Dream $16.98 Keller Williams has built his reputation as a one-man band, but also as an equally prolific and eclectic recording artist. So, it’s no surprise that he would want to stand his self-defined image on its ear with this long-in-the making collection of collaborations with other performers. No less than 31 other singers and musicians join him on one or more of the 16 tracks on the 73-minute CD. The biggest name, particularly for an artist known for his jam band associations, is former Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Bob Weir, who joins Williams on “Cadillac,” the two exchanging acoustic guitar riffs and singing Williams’ typically quirky lyrics. Then there is B? la Fleck, who adds his banjo to the progressive bluegrass of “People Watchin’.” Although perhaps fashioned with the guest stars in mind, those songs are characteristic of Williams’ most frequent style, as is “Sing for My Dinner,” on which he’s joined by the members of the String Cheese Incident, longtime friends of his. Other guests inspire different musical explorations. Jeff Covert contributes drums and lead guitar to the first track, “Play This,” which sounds like a mash-up of hardcore punk rock ? la Black Flag and the funk of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The funk continues with the second track, “Celebrate Your Youth,” featuring the band ModeReko, which could be mistaken for a lost song by Dave Matthews Band. The appearance of Michael Franti on “Ninja of Love” inspires a sort of Japanese reggae number, and Sanjay Mishra and Samir Chatterjee take the music to India for the instrumental “Lil’ Sexy Blues.” Second-generation San Francisco rock guitarist Steve Kimock, with Williams on bass and John Molo on drums, gives “Twinkle” a seven-plus-minute instrumental, the feel of one of the Dead’s “Space” improvisations, but Williams expects jazz guitarist John Scofield to adapt to his own style for “Got No Feather,” and Scofield obliges. First Light [Bonus Track] $10.98 Never one to take lyricism for granted, trumpeter and composer Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor’s studio for the third time in 1974 with the express purpose of making a record radically different from anything he’d cut before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie Hancock on Rhodes, guitarists Eric Gale and George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Airto Moreira on percussion, and Richard Wyands on acoustic piano to back him. The band was also supported by the truly ethereal and adventurous string arrangements of Don Sebesky (a first for Hubbard). The result is a masterpiece of textured sound, gorgeously far-flung charts, sweet, tight grooves, a subtle mystic feel, and some of Hubbard’s most exciting playing ever. The title track — there are two versions here, the alternate is almost five minute longer than the master — and Hubbard’s ingenious read of Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey,” as well as Leonard Bernstein’s “Lonely Town,” are so in the pocket that they bleed soul. Benson’s uncharacteristically edgy guitar playing juxtaposed against Hubbard’s warm tone, and Hancock’s beautifully modal Rhodes lines that are drenched with big, open, minor chord voicings, are simply made more illustrious and graceful by Sebesky’s strings. First Light [Japan] $7.99 Never one to take lyricism for granted, trumpeter and composer Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor’s studio for the third time in 1971 with the express purpose of making a record radically different from anything he’d cut before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie Hancock on Rhodes, guitarists Eric Gale and George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Airto Moreira on percussion, and Richard Wyands on acoustic piano to back him. The band was also supported by the truly ethereal and adventurous string arrangements of Don Sebesky (a first for Hubbard). The result is a masterpiece of textured sound, gorgeously far-flung charts, sweet, tight grooves, a subtle mystic feel, and some of Hubbard’s most exciting playing ever. The title track and Hubbard’s ingenious read of Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey,” as well as Leonard Bernstein’s “Lonely Town,” are so in the pocket that they bleed soul. Forever [Bonus Tracks] $18.98 Bookended by two tracks that essentially are the same piece — “Everywhere,” a quicker, almost dancy number that still sounds uniquely Cranes, and the slower, stripped-down “Rainbows” — Forever finds Cranes moving from strength to strength. Having reached a new level of variety and elegant restraint combined with brusque power on Wings of Joy, the foursome continued exploring such combinations on Forever without simply rehashing the previous album. If anything, the album went to extremes in both directions — the quieter moments were even more hushed and shadowed, the louder points all that much more whip-snap cruel. “Cloudless” remains the album’s most sweetly beautiful, truly haunting moment. Over what sounds like a synthesized combination of plucked violin and keyboards, doubtless played by Jim Shaw, sister Alison delivers a softly husky vocal that slowly grows in strength. More synth strings swell up in the background, just enough, followed later by gentle electric guitar and at the end distant drums. On a completely different tip, there’s “Clear,” its searing, blunt lead guitar line matched by a massive rhythm slam, only occasionally interrupted by a quieter moment or two before launching back into the full band attack. “Jewel” ended up being a surprise U.K. and U.S. hit, though thanks to a somewhat transformed remix courtesy of longtime fan Robert Smith (in fact, Forever takes its name from a Cure rarity of the same title). On the album, Jim Shaw’s original rougher drums stand out, but the attractive poppy groove of the song remains the same, Alison Shaw’s singing at her clearest yet over the simple but effective acoustic guitar rhythms and abrasive electric solo. Friends and Relatives: Red Rocks Live [Video/DVD] $19.98 Over the years, Neil Young has issued probably more in-concert home videos than any other popular music artist, and he’s wasting no time with the DVD format, issuing his second DVD of 2000, Friends & Relatives: Red Rocks Live. Whereas Silver & Gold was a mellow, solo, all-acoustic set, Red Rocks Live is the opposite — Neil is joined by, well, friends and relatives (Booker T bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, longtime pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, Muscle Shoals veteran Spooner Oldham on piano, session drummer Jim Keltner, and Young’s wife Pegi and sister Astrid on vocals), and focuses primarily on amplified rock & roll. While it’s not as primal or electrifyingly loud as his work with Crazy Horse, Young definitely appears to be having a good time, focusing on his more laid-back rock & roll tunes (as he and his band battle a wicked rainstorm at the scenic outdoor venue throughout). Longtime fans will welcome the re-insertion of such old forgotten nuggets as “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” “Motorcycle Mama,” “Walk On,” “Winterlong,” “Words,” “World on a String,” “Mellow My Mind,” and “Bad Fog of Loneliness,” as well as more recent favs as “Harvest Moon,” “Razor Love,” and a previously unheard song, “Fool for Your Love.” But like most other Neil videos (Weld, Year of the Horse, etc.), the centerpiece is the haunting tale of drugs and death, “Tonight’s the Night,” which is stripped back down to its original basic structure, as Young puts down his trusty old black Les Paul in favor of the piano. Another highlight proves to an extended reading of the early Crazy Horse jamfest “Cowgirl in the Sand,” in which Young rips it up on the six-string.
