#1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits $18.98 The title is self-explanatory: guitarist Chuck Loeb has scored no less than a dozen number one hits on radio charts for smooth jazz. He’s also played on literally hundreds of records, making him the Tommy Tedesco of the genre. None of that matters very much to his fans, and this collection is clearly assembled for them. While fans of smooth jazz (and what is in the 21st century now called “contemporary jazz”) will have enjoyed Loeb’s music and may even be familiar with it, it’s not so much the individual tracks that matter as the consistent sound and vibe. Early on, Loeb embraced the feel of smooth jazz and became one of its great ambassadors, displaying a knack for writing and producing music custom-tailored to the radio format that was so successful in the 1980s and 1990s (and continues in mutated form in the 2000s). His name has become synonymous with the genre, and the most memorable of his hits have their own timeless quality: “Blue Kiss,” “Sarao,” “Just Us,” and of course, “The Music Inside.” Other tracks will be not be especially well known by name but are easily identifiable by sound, including “Tropical,” “High Five,”and “Cruzin’ South.” The slippery, silky backbeat funk Loeb employs as a canvas in his tunes comes across as immediately welcoming and accessible; his guitar lines are always fluid; and his soloing is cut into short, tight pockets. Many of his collaborators are well known in the world of jazz at large as well: John Pattitucci, Jason Miles, Jim Beard, Will Lee, and Nestor Torres are all here, as well as many more. ‘Round Midnight $11.99 Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. 1000 Hurts $26.98 Don’t expect 1000 Hurts to open your ears to anything new. Shellac’s sound hasn’t developed much. Are they yanking chains by periodically releasing selections from one extremely fruitful session? Only the band and a few tape operators know. No other band sounds like them, which legitimizes this status quo. The jagged scrapes of Steve Albini’s guitar, the somewhat laggard bass from Bob Weston, and the awkward-yet-steady time keeping of Todd Trainer’s drums remain in top form. For what it’s worth, Albini’s guitar does seem to gain more grace as the years go on — just watch out for the ugly jazz fusion lick that ends “Canaveral.” Raw, no-frills production? Absence of overdubs? Goofy time signatures? They’re all a part of the cauldron. As with the band’s previous LPs, you get healthy doses of extended hypnotic doodling, rumbling mid-tempo tantrums, speedy jabs, and a joke or two. And as with any recording featuring the wordsmithery of Steve Albini, one fights the urge to transcribe the whole damn thing. Often humorous, occasionally unsettling, but always intelligent and thought-provoking, Albini’s lyrics are a bit nastier than the past couple records. “Prayer to God” is no plea for forgiveness or well-wishing; he asks his lord to kill an ex-girlfriend and her accomplice. “Canaveral” dreams of whisking an enemy to outer space, in hopes that he’ll become fertilizer. If you know the band’s sound, your mind was probably made up prior to reading this. You know what to expect, aside from it not being quite as fantastic as At Action Park, but certainly better than Terraform. True to Shellac form, the record is a sound purchase. 1000 Kilometers $16.98 Throughout their long existence, Oregon have consistently performed music that is difficult to categorize. Some of their acoustic ventures, particularly in the group’s earlier days, could be considered “world jazz” or “folk-jazz” due to the unusual instrumentation, avoidance of conventional blue notes, and original pieces. On 1000 Kilometers, there are times when the group actually sounds close to Weather Report in the 1970s, particularly when electronics and Paul McCandless’ soprano are utilized. But there are also performances that sound far from Weather Report, focusing on Ralph Towner’s acoustic guitar, McCandless’ other instruments, and the rhythm team of bassist Glen Moore and drummer Mark Walker. The music constantly keeps one guessing, and although McCandless is generally the lead voice in the ensembles, all four musicians make strong contributions. 1000 Kilometers is a fine effort from a unique band. The improvisation by Paul McCandless on the title track was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, and Mark Walker’s “Deep Six” was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

1000 Years of Popular Music $28.98 As the year 2000 loomed on the horizon, Playboy Magazine took it upon itself to ask a number of leading musicians to name the greatest songs of the soon-to-be-completed millennium. One of the musos queried was Richard Thompson, and while many of his comrades couldn’t be bothered to go further back than 1940 in their overview of musical history, the scholarly Thompson took the notion seriously enough to extend his own list of notable songs as far back as 1068 A.D. While Playboy never ended up printing Thompson’s list, the notion made enough of an impression on him that he put together a special show in which he guided his audience through his own version of the greatest hits of the past ten centuries. 1000 Years of Popular Music is culled from recordings of Thompson’s concert series of the same name, and beyond the novelty value of the set list (from the oldest round in the English language to Britney Spears in a mere 76 minutes!), it also offers a rare look at Thompson the interpretive musician, as well as lends a fascinating perspective on his musical influences. As one might expect, the early innings are dominated by the British folk tradition, with “King Henry V’s Conquest of France” and “Blackleg Miner” suggesting where Thompson’s melodic sense first took root, and other tunes demonstrating how operetta and the British music halls absorbed and refined similar themes. Thompson also indulges his passion for classic jazz of the 1930s and ’40s on some Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong chestnuts, and wraps up by following rock & roll through Jerry Lee Lewis, the Who, and the Beatles to Prince and Britney Spears (“Oops! I Did It Again,” of which Thompson writes, “Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song”). Considering that precious few of these songs were meant to be performed by a solo acoustic guitar, Thompson’s arrangements are inventive and effective; whether he’s going for laughs or drama, he gets the most from his material. 1984 $17.98 Originally released in 1973 by the Soft Machine bassist shortly after the band had lost eccentric drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt and had begun their evolution into a respectable (and somewhat predictable) jazz-rock ensemble, this was Hopper’s attempt at something more experimental. As he reports in his amusing CD notes, the record label CBS was all in favor of his solo excursion until he let them know what he had in mind, at which point they declined to pay even for studio time, so Hopper had to take out a bank loan to make the recording — which says a lot for Hopper’s belief in his artistic vision, and not much at all for the musical (as opposed to financial) vision of CBS. Hopper’s 1984 is inspired by George Orwell’s totalitarian fantasy of the same name, and the two longest tracks, “Miniluv” and “Miniplenty,” feature Hopper’s multitracked solo work on bass, percussion, mellophone, loops and electronics, with only John Marshall, the Soft Machine drummer, contributing additional percussion on the second piece. This music had an appropriately eerie, ominous quality, with heavy use of chattering tape loops, reverberating bass drones and woozy, sometimes harsh slide work on bass guitar strings. Terry Riley’s early cyclical trance music was a large influence on Hopper at the time of this recording, and there are also strong echoes of “Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band,” for example, in the intertwined, looped sax lines in “Minitrue.” However, several of the shorter selections on this CD, with the addition of various saxophones, trombones and other horns, are inexplicably tied to a rather twisted and ponderous R&B groove. Hopper suggests, retrospectively, that these several pieces may have represented the “normal” citizens in Orwell’s dystopia, who were nonetheless a little “bent” by their soul-destroying environment. 1995 $16.98 This is a 2002 reissue of the original CD by guitar hero David “Fuze” Fiuczynski’s Screaming Headless Torsos quintet. Along with two previously unissued tracks (Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” and George Harrison’s “Something), this outing provides an early glimpse of one of the most powerful jazz-rock units to emerge in quite some time. On the other hand, perhaps the brand of music heard here could be akin to shock therapy treatment. Vocalist Dean Bowman adds a lot of character to this quintet as he raps, croons, and scats atop an assortment of high-octane pieces, consisting of funk motifs, jazzy progressions, and tricky time signatures. Dynamics abound, partly due to the rhythm section’s razor-sharp precision and seemingly impossible technical gymnastics. Fiuczynski leads the charge via his often slithery attack, marked by screeching crescendos, blazing single-note leads, and swiftly executed chord voicings. However, the group lowers the generally excitable proceedings down a notch or two during their soul-blues rendition of “Little Wing.” The band’s slightly in-your-face demeanor provides the knockout punch, yet it’s not all about aimless or frenzied chops fests. 2011 Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards $12.99 The 11 tracks by ten artists that make up this album of music associated with the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards held in San Diego in 2011 would constitute a good hour on contemporary jazz radio, with station identification and commercials added. There are the usual covers of old pop hits, in this case Wayman Tisdale’s version of McFadden & Whitehead’s “Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now” and Steve Cole of the Guess Who’s “Undun.” There are a couple of vocal numbers with Jonathan Butler’s “Feels So Good” and Tisdale’s (again) “Sunshine.” And there are plenty of tunes in which a rhythm track supports an easygoing solo on a guitar or horn for four or five minutes before fading out. The exceptional tracks are the slightly left-of-center ones. L.A. Chillharmonic (a name that deserves an award in itself) presents “Checkin’ You Out,” which uses several different solo instruments. And, with the best saved for last, Kevin Eubanks’ seven-and-half-minute “Adoration” is a lovely duet between acoustic guitar and electric piano. That track might have been categorized as new age, and disc jockeys may be tempted to talk over it, but at least it demonstrates that the “contemporary jazz” category can hold more than one kind of music. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

20th Anniversary $11.99 Russ Freeman probably had no clue that he was starting a revolution when he put together a new band called the Rippingtons in 1986, but the advent of smooth jazz can be directly traced to the release of that band’s debut Moonlighting album the following year. Some jazz purists may never forgive him for that, but Freeman and the group, having weathered numerous personnel changes, still reign within the genre and have every reason to celebrate. Hence this 20th Anniversary CD/DVD package, which finds Freeman, the guitarist/keyboardist who has been the sole mainstay throughout the decades, calling on a virtual army of past and present members to assist him in creating a fitting monument to his accomplishments. The legions who’ve followed the Rippingtons will know what to expect here: impeccably performed, perfectly enjoyable, occasionally stimulating pop-jazz without an out-of-place atonal squawk or honk in sight. What makes 20th Anniversary a standout is the parade of guests, among them most of the Moonlighting crew (except, thankfully, for Kenny G.) — pianist David Benoit, drummer Tony Morales, saxophonist Brandon Fields, and percussionist Steve Reid — and visiting saxophonists Dave Koz and Kirk Whalum, both of whom bring their distinctive wails to Freeman’s compositions. Although the album is largely instrumental, a few vocalists, including Patti Austin and Jeffrey Osborne, take turns, and Brian McKnight has virtually all of the track “Anything” to himself, save for Freeman’s classical guitar. It is, in the end, Freeman’s guitar work that remains the main draw, though: technically proficient, he always manages to bring an emotionalism, albeit sometimes muted, to the proceedings, even if he sometimes seems as if he’s aching to break out and try something truly daring and never quite does. 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of Larry Carlton $9.99 The ten cuts on Larry Carlton’s entry in the 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection series are from his MCA years — after he had left the Crusaders, entered into a solo career with Warner Bros., and become nearly a household name for his work on Steely Dan’s later records. The music here begins with his acoustic work on Alone/But Never Alone and Discovery. This was a departure for Carlton, whose breezy work sounded seamless on the electric but on acoustic guitar found new resonance. A cover of “Minute by Minute” is followed by a stellar cover of Eddie Floyd’s “Knock on Wood” from Discovery. The other albums represented here — less stellar because of their slick lite funk-jazz approach — are Last Nite and On Solid Ground, though the latter does feature a very acceptable cover of “Layla.” Carlton fans have all this stuff already, and those new to his work will be best served by seeking out his Warner material (the title cut from Sleepwalk is here, however) or his work with the Crusaders. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

21 Spices $16.98 Some of the stodgier individuals in the jazz world labor under the delusion that a big-band project is not legitimate unless it sounds like something Buddy Rich would have done in the ’50s and is full of overdone warhorse standards that have been recorded by literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different artists over the years. But thankfully, not everyone in jazz sees things that way. 21 Spices, in fact, takes big-band music into both the jazz-rock fusion realm and the world jazz realm. This 2011 release is a collaboration between Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu (who composed all of the material), drummer Simon Phillips, and Germany’s NDR Big Band; also on board are Michel Alibo on electric bass and Roland Cabezas on electric guitar. And with this lineup in place, the result is a fusion album that has a strong world music influence and sounds a bit Weather Report-ish in spots, only with the muscular horn section that the NDR Big Band brings to the table. Naturally, Gurtu’s mastery of Indian percussion and the wordless, Indian-style scat vocals that the Mumbai native provides gives 21 Spices (which contains both live and studio performances) some Indian appeal at times, but Indian music is hardly the only world music influence that asserts itself on this 55-minute CD. Actually, Latin music is a more prominent influence, especially on “Broken Rhythms” and “1-2 Beaucoup.” Meanwhile, “Balato” and “Jhulelal” both incorporate elements of African music. So in terms of world music influences, 21 Spices is pleasingly far-reaching. And it is also an exciting demonstration of the fact that regardless of what bop snobs have to say, big-band recordings don’t have to recycle old Buddy Rich charts in order to have validity. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

23rd & Stout $15.98 After more than 30 years in the music biz, Chuck E. Weiss is still best known (a) as one of Tom Waits’ best friends, and (b) for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones’ hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” The latter distinction hasn’t done much for him lately, but he seems to be counting on the former to draw interest in his fourth album, 23rd & Stout. Most of 23rd & Stout sounds like some unreleased Tom Waits album that walks in a Twilight Zone between the Beefheart-influenced throb of Swordfishtrombones and the laid-back beatnik vibe of Blue Valentine. While it’s entirely possible that Waits has borrowed a bit of his buddy Weiss’ schtick over the years, there’s also little argument that Waits is far better at it, and it doesn’t help that Weiss’ band here (headlined by Tony Gilkyson on guitar and Don Heffington on drums) isn’t able to deliver the gloriously strange groove of Waits’ more recent work, though the group sounds great on the jazz-leaning material. When Weiss goes into a shaggy-dog story like the title cut or a lurching stomp such as “Prince Minsky’s Lament,” it’s all but impossible not to compare him to Waits, but in all fairness Weiss is a better than average songwriter, and when he lets his funny side take over (like he does on “Half Off at the Rebop Shop,” “Sho Is Cold,” or “Piccolo Pete”), he’s an enjoyable and absorbing performer. (His sly interpretation of “Primrose Lane” also suggests he could deliver a fine set of standards if he were so inclined.) Too much of 23rd & Stout makes Chuck E. Weiss sound like the Baja Marimba Band to Tom Waits’ Tijuana Brass, and the shame of that is he’s clearly talented enough establish a more distinctive creative identity by now, as the best moments of this album confirm. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

3 $14.98 On their sardonically named third album, 3, New York City’s multi-ethnic Electroputas tell you right off the bat that they are sonic absurdists, favoring discordance over grace, but they are also unrepentant groovemeisters of a supreme order, taking a decidedly Krautrock approach to extended jams with undeniable hooks. The Social Registry website says it best: “From a storm of musical chaos emerges the trio Electroputas with chunks of noise, swathes of psychedelic fervor, and large dashes of complete freakout fever.” All but the most hardcore of noiseniks will want to fast-forward through the first track, “International Harvest,” as its two minutes and change of wordless screams, growls, stutters, and chants seem to go on for ten times that length. But anyone who appreciates a disjointed yet rollicking groove will be rewarded with track two, “AA,” and its chordal bass (recalling Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom”!), shimmying organ, spazzy guitar, and little Japanese girl vocals reminiscent of Cibo Matto or Deerhoof. The latter band’s complex instrumentals are also referenced on the herky-jerky guitar/bass duel of “Echo Temptation,” as is the late, great Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. “Master Triangle” is a sincere homage to one of the band’s biggest influences, Can, a bass-driven piledriver (as are most of the songs here), especially in the vocals ripped straight from that band’s inimitable Damo Suzuki. “Profundo Rosso” is a post-punk/free jazz guitarist’s wet dream as a tinny electric careens from speaker to speaker, accompanied by vocals seemingly in Spanish, French, and Italian, garbled through some of the bandmembers’ Japanese accents (most of the lyrics are unintelligible, quite possibly intentionally, except for this classic couplet from “AA”: “I like the taste of whiskey on my lips/So you said, my superstar”). 3 $16.98 For their album 3, the self-proclaimed Godfathers of Groove mix it up a bit more within the soul-jazz arena, playing interpretations of pop tunes, some straight-ahead jazz, originals, and in essence the funky music that is at the core of their identities. Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove “My Blues” with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie’s shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple “Down Hill” with Easley’s deft tenor leading the way, there’s little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of “Stella by Starlight” gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father’s unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of “Light My Fire” and “What’s Going On,” admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered “The Funkster” or on the solid-sending feed he provides during “Groove On” above Green’s overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of “Monkey Milk,” in an Average White Band “Pick Up the Pieces” mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of “Autumn Leaves.” Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit.
