Basic Guitar Lessons…….Custom Guitar
Custom-built guitars are just a dream for regular guys. You usually have to be famous or rich to get your hand on a custom hand built guitar that is made exactly for your convenience. The world today offers a mass manufacturing and global distribution that you could possibly buy almost everything you want. For instruments like guitar, huge manufacturers are turning out high-quality instruments at very affordable prices and advance production techniques have made it possible for factories to offer options and a point of customization that would have been expensive and impractical in the past. On the other hand, there are also booming cottage industries of individual guitar-makers who can build a completely custom-made guitar suited to your needs.
Some may ask why bother with a custom guitar when there are so many choices available in the market. The primary reason for most is the basic ergonomic needs. You may just benefit from a unique neck geometry that fits your hands better or custom electronics to better capture your live playing style. Any feature or combination of features that you can’t find in the usual stock instrument can easily justify a need for a custom order.
A good starting point would probably be choosing wood for your guitar. You may need to research a little to find out what tone you will get from each of the different guitar tone woods. You should narrow your choices based on the tone that you are looking for.
As you start to explore the options, you will learn that there are so many variations in woods. For instance, if you wanted a spruce top, you can explore all the spruce varieties which include Sitka, Adirondack, Engelmann, German, Carpathian, Bosnian and a lot more. However, the woods used for the back and sides offer more visual variety and come in an even wider range of exotic types.
Do your research to find out what the consensus is on the tone that you get from certain woods. Just remember that the wood is only the starting point and is not the only part of the guitar that will affect your tone.
If your friend or your luthier is willing, it would be a great idea to let him accompany you at lumber store that sells different types of exotic words. Think about the guitars you have owned in the past and decide what woods you have loved the most and keep these three things in mind:
Tone. The denser the wood usually gives off brighter sounds
Beauty. Some woods are more beautiful or fancier looking.
Weight. Denser wood is heavier.
Some wood stores may already have available guitar body blanks cut for you to choose from. If so, you will likely get these much cheaper than buy a larger piece to cut down.
Lastly, when choosing wood, be aware of the ecological and sustainability issues revolving many exotic woods. There are ethical and legal problems with a lot of the woods that are frequently used for guitar manufacturing, especially those used for the backs and sides. You should understand and consider your own position on this kind of issues and be aware of potential problems especially if you have any plans to travel abroad with your instrument.

#1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits $18.98 The title is self-explanatory: guitarist Chuck Loeb has scored no less than a dozen number one hits on radio charts for smooth jazz. He’s also played on literally hundreds of records, making him the Tommy Tedesco of the genre. None of that matters very much to his fans, and this collection is clearly assembled for them. While fans of smooth jazz (and what is in the 21st century now called “contemporary jazz”) will have enjoyed Loeb’s music and may even be familiar with it, it’s not so much the individual tracks that matter as the consistent sound and vibe. Early on, Loeb embraced the feel of smooth jazz and became one of its great ambassadors, displaying a knack for writing and producing music custom-tailored to the radio format that was so successful in the 1980s and 1990s (and continues in mutated form in the 2000s). His name has become synonymous with the genre, and the most memorable of his hits have their own timeless quality: “Blue Kiss,” “Sarao,” “Just Us,” and of course, “The Music Inside.” Other tracks will be not be especially well known by name but are easily identifiable by sound, including “Tropical,” “High Five,”and “Cruzin’ South.” The slippery, silky backbeat funk Loeb employs as a canvas in his tunes comes across as immediately welcoming and accessible; his guitar lines are always fluid; and his soloing is cut into short, tight pockets. Many of his collaborators are well known in the world of jazz at large as well: John Pattitucci, Jason Miles, Jim Beard, Will Lee, and Nestor Torres are all here, as well as many more. This set is a welcome addition to Loeb’s catalog and will likely deeply satisfy any listener who enjoys smooth jazz. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

A Place to Bury Strangers $19.98 From the opening blast of overdriven guitars and hyperkinetic drums it’s apparent A Place to Bury Strangers, self-described “loudest band in New York,” want to pummel you into submission with their unique take on white noise-derived guitar splendor, but then a hypnotic single-string riff takes over to briefly deliver a respite from the assault, recalling the classic era of shoegaze. The swirling atmosphere of guitar feedback and reverb-drenched vocals immediately bring to mind the most obvious comparison: vintage Jesus and Mary Chain. And while the Mary Chain circa Psychocandy evoked the Beach Boys on bad acid or the the Shirelles gigging poolside at the Manson family compound, A Place to Bury Strangers also evoke a host of noisy early-’90s British bands like My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Ride, Chapterhouse, Pale Saints, and the Catherine Wheel without sounding exactly like any of them. These bands knew how to cloak their essentially straightforward and anthemic rock songs in layers upon layers of guitar effects to lend an air of psychedelia and psychosis to what without that noisy dressing would strip down to candy-coated pop confections. And what A Place to Bury Strangers indeed do is write pop songs, with simple, traditional arrangements, primarily in slightly menacing minor keys, and saturated with their own unique brand of sonic mayhem. This is facilitated by the fact that their guitarist/singer designs his own effects pedals at his day job, allowing for a trademark-able and wide variety of signature bombastic sounds (he also does custom work for illustrious members of other similarly minded space rockers). Many songs, like the obvious single “To Fix the Gash in Your Head,” feature a pile-driving drum machine enhancement which adds to the multiple layers and recalls a time when dark dream pop (Curve, Slowdive, the Telescopes) and dancefloor-friendly goth rock (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, early New Order) were club mainstays. And aside from the lone d… |

Beautiful Rivers and Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound of South Korea’s Shin Joong $19.98 Guitarist, producer, and songwriter Shin Joong Hyun’s music was seldom heard outside his native South Korea. Save for the recordings purchased by returning American GIs or in the collections of migrating South Koreans, it seldom entered the West and was only discovered by rabid vinyl collectors in the 21st century. His story is a long, often tragic one, though it’s full of redemption and is ongoing: Shin resumed making music at the turn of the century. Also, he recently received one of popular music’s greatest honors: Fender created his own Custom Shop Tribute Series guitar. Shin is only the sixth player ever to receive such an honor. The others’ last names are Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, Van Halen, and Vaughan. The intrepid Light in the Attic imprint decided to tell Shin’s story through Beautiful Rivers and Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound of South Korea’s Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974, his first ever anthology. In addition to collecting 14 tracks, it also offers a lengthy biographical essay — with interview — by Kevin Howes. Musically, Shin was deeply influenced by American and British rock and pop styles of all stripes, but also by his own country’s folk and pop traditions. Incidentally, they came together inseparably in his music. While “Moon Watching” from Shin’s debut solo album, Hiky Shin, owes greatly to Johnny & the Hurricanes-styled instrumental rock and surf music, the very next cut, “Please Don’t Bother Me Anymore,” from Shin Joong Hyun & the Golden Grapes’ self-titled album of 1972, is pure choogling psych-pop informed equally by Hendrix’s wah-wah soloing, the Jefferson Airplane, and the Mamas & the Papas! “I Don’t Like,” cut in 1970 by female vocalist Lee Jung Hwa backed by Shin & the Donkeys, was a pure Motown rip. “Spring Rain,” cut the same year by male singer Park In Soo, is a take on deep psychedelic soul backed by Shin and his band the Questions. “‘J’ Blues 72″ is Shin & the Golden Grapes playing an instrumental influenced by Hendrix … |

Death Magnetic $40.99 Call Death Magnetic Kirk Hammett’s revenge. Famously browbeaten into accepting Lars Ulrich and producers Bob Rock’s dictum that guitar solos were “dated” and thereby verboten for 2003′s St. Anger — a fraught recording chronicled on the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster — Metallica’s lead guitarist dominates this 2008 sequel, playing with an euphoric fury not heard in years, if not decades. This aesthetic shift isn’t because Hammett suddenly rules the band: powerless to add solos to St. Anger, he couldn’t reinstate them without the blessing of Ulrich and James Hetfield, the politburo of Metallica. The duo suffered some combination of shame and humility in the wake of the muddled St. Anger and Monster, convincing these two unmovable forces to change direction. They ditched longtime producer Rock — who’d helmed every album since 1991′s breakthrough blockbuster Metallica — in favor of Rick Rubin, patron saint of all veteran rockers looking to reconnect with their early spark. Rubin may be the go-to producer for wayward superstars but as the producer of Slayer, he’s also rooted in thrash, so he understands the core of Metallica’s greatness and gently steers them back to basics on Death Magnetic. Of course, Metallica’s basics are pretty complex: intertwined guitar riffs, frenetic solos, and thunderous double-bass drums stitched together as intricate seven-minute suites. Metallica slowly weaned themselves away from labyrinthine metal during the ’90s, tempering their intensity, straightening out riffs, spending nearly as much time exploring detours as driving the main road, all the while losing sight of their identity. This culminated in the confused St. Anger, a transparent and botched attempt at returning to their roots, crippled by the chaos surrounding the departure of bassist Jason Newsted. With all their problems sorted out in public — including replacing Newsted with Robert Trujillo, who acquiesces to the Metallica custom of being buried far, far in the… |

DiMarzio Humbucking PAF Guitar Pickup w/ Nickel Cover – DP223FN $63.94 Here are the characteristics that make a great vintage humbucker: a soft magnetic field, sweet tone, perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. For the PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge DiMarzio wanted to continue in the path of pioneers such as Seth Lover (designer of the original Patent Applied For humbucker) and create pickups that combine all of the characteristics of great vintage humbuckers. These pickups are not merely clones. DiMarzio re-engineered the PAF using their Patented technology and Larry DiMarzio?s own 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul as the reference. Larry?s Les Paul has a uniquely amazing Sound and it?s not only due to the pickups – it?s the total fusion of many elements of the Guitar itself. Although the pickups have a weak magnetic field, the sound is well defined – almost like a single-coil. DiMarzio duplicated the weaker magnetic field in order to allow the strings to vibrate longer, as well as Focus and articulate the attack and output. They use computer-controlled winders to consistently layer the 42-gauge custom-coated wire, achieving the exact Frequency response they want. Then it?s dipped in their custom formula to eliminate squeal and microphonics. The cover is made from nickel-silver and their new plating makes it more magnetically Transparent than the originals. The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck is smooth but not muddy. It performs equally well in the neck or bridge, just as the best humbuckers from the 50s did. The PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge is hotter than the Neck. It is not only for set neck 24-3/4 scale guitars, but it?s also an excellent bridge pickup for trem-equipped bolt-ons. Tech Talk: The PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge model has the best qualities of the Virtual PAF bridge and Virtual Hot PAF pickups and then some. It?s as loud as the VHPAF, but has as much low-end and midrange definition as the VPAF bridge model. The highs are actually bigger and smoother than either model. |

Fender® Classic Series ’50s Esquire Guitar – 2-Color Sunburst – 013-1502-303 $699.99 The Classic Series ?50s Esquire Guitar features an ash body with a single-ply White pickguard, alnico Bridge pickup and a maple neck and fretboard. In the middle position the standard tone control circuit is activated and it functions just like any other tone control. Flood $14.99 Swamp blues twosome Moreland & Arbuckle, with assistance from drummer Brad Horner, graduate to the relative big time with their debut for the high-profile Telarc label. The hundreds of one-night stands in dingy blues clubs and as support for other roots artists yield a tough, no-nonsense set that barrels through 50 minutes of highly charged Delta-styled blues and blues-rock. Like Billy Gibbons, guitarist Aaron Moreland gets a lot of gritty sound out of his guitar, in his case a custom cigar box contraption with three guitar strings and two bass strings. A bassist contributes to three tracks, but Moreland’s attack is so powerful that he doesn’t need the help. Singer/harpist Dustin Arbuckle blows like a combination of Little Walter (whose “Hate to See You Go” is one of the album’s few covers), Paul Butterfield, and Jason Ricci; in other words, plugged in and spitting blood. He’s also become a convincing singer with a dynamic and powerful voice able to infuse emotion into the few ballads that provide a brief respite from the locomotive attack. His emotive croon on the acoustic “Your Man Won’t Ever Know” is spooky and threatening. Less successful is the standard Chicago groove of “Don’t Wake Me,” a by-the-numbers shuffle that changes the disc’s more raucous tempo but doesn’t take the band, augmented by a pianist on the track, anywhere others haven’t already been. But you’re never far from a blistering, midtempo Mississippi blues like “In the Morning I’ll be Gone,” where the guitar and harp lock together on a grinding riff, then skirt around each other until the chorus. Moreland’s banjo on the closing “Can’t Get Clear” (an earlier creeping six-minute electric version is another album highlight) shows that he’s far from a one-trick guitar pony. The band veers into acoustic country dirt on “Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone” and “Red Moon Rising.” Both changeups complement the more rugged, plugged-in territory plowed on the majority of this impressive disc. Guild Guitars F-412 Acoustic Guitar – Blonde $2899 The quality and ubiquity of the jumbo 12-strings has earned Guild a permanent place in Guitar history. As historians Tom and Mary Anne Evans once wrote, ?The basic virtue of Guild 12-strings is that they are very loud and (have) a clarity and definition of Sound not normally associated with 12-string guitars.” One of the keys to that clarity and definition is solid construction. While the body size and scale length are the same as the 6-string jumbo models, the 12-strings are 1-13/16″ wide at the nut and feature the time-tested 12-string jumbo bracing pattern. Designed in the late 1960s as Guild?s first jumbo 12-strings, the F-412 and its sibling, the F-512, are two of the most enduring and popular models. True to its vintage roots, today?s F-412 has the same body dimensions as the original (17″ wide, 21″ long, 4.8″ deep). The F-412 features an arched figured maple back and solid figured maple sides, a solid AAA Sitka spruce top, bound ebony fingerboard with abalone and mother-of-pearl Block inlays, ?G”-shield headstock logo, gold Hardware and a pure nitrocellulose lacquer finish. -Specifications: -Body Style: 12-String Jumbo -Top: Solid AAA Sitka Spruce -Bracing: Guild Scalloped Red Spruce -Back: Select Arched Laminated Figured Maple -Sides: Solid Figured Maple -Bridge: Rosewood -Neck: 3-Piece Mahogany/Walnut/Mahogany -Fretboard: Ebony, 12″ Radius, (305 mm) -Width at Nut: 1-13/16″ (46 mm) -No. of Frets: 20 -Scale Length: 25-5/8″ (651 mm) -Hardware: Gold-plated -Machine Heads: Custom Gotoh Gold-Plated Open-Back 12-String Tuners -Finish: High Gloss (Nitrocellulose Lacquer) -Unique Features: -Ebony Headcap with Pearl logo-Dovetail Neck Joint with Slim Heel-Lightweight Laminated Birch Tail-Block-30′ Radius Top-Red Spruce Scalloped Braced Top-Bone Bridge Pins-White Neck, Headstock and Body Bindings with Multi-Laminate Purfling-Bone Nut and Saddle-Natural Mother-of-Pearl and Abalone Block Position Inlays-Tortoise Shell Pickguard-Dual-Action Truss Rod-Graphite Reinforced |
