What are some good beginner Acoustic Guitars for females?
I’m looking to buy an Acoustic Guitar. I’m an absolute beginner and really don’t know where to start. I’ve been reading a little to try to figure out what might be best for someone starting out.
From the research I have been doing, a lot of the guitars seem to be awkward to play if you are female and have a smaller frame (like me). I’m looking for something that allows for me to play the chords easily, perhaps a thinner neck but without having to compromise on quality. Is there anything like that out there? I have heard Daisy Rock guitars are lightweight and have thinner necks, but that they aren’t very good. What works for a beginner? Also, steel strings Vs nylon strings?
Can anyone offer any advice?
it really doesnt matter
im 13 and i play guitar. i have a 38in acoustic thats for my size
and i have an elecric guitar.
whatever you start off with you’ll get used to.
its better to start off with something a little more tough so then later on once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to play easier on any guitar

No Beginner $13.58 Keri Leigh’s second album, No Beginner, is a more distinguished effort than her debut. Leigh and her guitarist/husband Lyon stake out a territory between Texas blues and blues-rock, much like their predecessors Stevie Ray Vaughan, Janis Joplin and ZZ Top. Leigh’s music doesn’t have as many rock & roll overtones, but she and her band, the Blue Devils, play with a fiery rock energy and that energy comes across more clearly here than on their debut. ~ Thom Owens, Rovi Performers: Andy Murphy – Choir, Chorus; Dave Horton – Choir, Chorus, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Kevin Hall – Choir, Chorus, Drums; Mark Lyon – Choir, Chorus, Slide Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar, Guitar (Steel); Mary Lyon – Choir, Chorus, Slide Guitar, Guitar, Guitar (Steel), Guitar (Acoustic); Carl Keesee – Choir, Chorus, Bass; Frankie J. Masterpiece Guitars $37.59 Mention Steve Howe’s name to most people, and they immediately think of his work with the British progressive rock powerhouse Yes. But there is more to Howe than progressive rock; outside of Yes, the guitarist has also embraced Spanish flamenco, ragtime, and many other things. Howe is versatile and eclectic, and on Masterpiece Guitars, he demonstrates that Bill Bruford isn’t the only Yes member (past or present) who is capable of playing jazz. Howe co-leads this session with fellow guitarist Martin Taylor, who is primarily a jazz musician — and the results are a long way from Howe’s work with Yes. You won’t hear “Close to the Edge,” “Long Distance Runaround,” “The Gates of Delirium,” or “Starship Trooper” on this album. What you will hear is a lot of bop — very straight-ahead, swinging, acoustic-oriented bop — and the two guitarists enjoy a strong rapport on original material as well as inspired performances of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile,” Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are,” and Lerner & Loewe’s “Thank Heaven for Little Girls.” On a few occasions, Masterpiece Guitars strays from jazz; Howe’s “Tailpiece,” for example, is perhaps best described as progressive bluegrass. It certainly has that down-home country twang. But if Masterpiece Guitars offers a few side dishes that aren’t jazz, it’s safe to say that straight-ahead jazz is the main course. Straight-ahead jazz is Taylor’s strong point — that’s what he does best, and on Masterpiece Guitars, jazz also works enjoyably well for the broad-minded Steve Howe. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Martin Taylor – Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Steve Howe – Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric) |

Masada Guitars $12.78 John Zorn has long maintained that Masada is more a collection of songs than a band, and he’s asked a bunch of friends for their interpretations as part of Masada’s tenth anniversary, the first release being Masada Guitars. Those expecting an electric romp through the Masada songbook might be disappointed; Masada Guitars consists entirely of solo, mostly acoustic performances. Preconceptions aside, this is a beautiful album. Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, and Tim Sparks each bring their own voice to these tunes: Sparks with his rich fingerpicking, Ribot coming from his classical guitar background, and Bill Frisell with his unmistakable ethereal tone. The performances are closer to the Circle Maker or Bar Khokba recordings than the “Masada Band” proper — beautiful readings, generally without the pyrotechnics the band can produce even on a slower tune. Somewhat surprisingly, it’s Frisell who turns in the only remotely “out” material, bringing out his delay to color his tunes and getting into some demented skronk and fun on both “Katzatz” and “Kochot.” Sparks’ renditions on steel string acoustic sound very similar to his previous Tzadik album, Neshamah. Marc Ribot’s playing on what sounds like a nylon-string classical guitar might surprise some folks who are unaware of his classical background (he studied with Frantz Casseus), yet you can still hear elements of his playing style come through.Just as Circle Maker and Bar Khokba showed a different side to these melodies, so it is with Masada Guitars. With literally dozens of songs in the Masada book and almost as many talented friends, Zorn could be mining these tunes for years to come. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi Performers: Bill Frisell – Guitar; Marc Ribot – Guitar; Tim Sparks – Guitar |

The method is equally suitable for students using electric or acoustic guitars. Nashville Guitars $8.78 On Nashville Guitars, produced by noted session guitarist Louie Shelton (the Jackson Five, the Monkees), he contributes the up-tempo track “High Roller,” accompanied by ten more tracks from some of the finest pickers in Nashville. There isn’t a lackluster cut among these 11 tracks. Mark Casstevens contributes an acoustic picking masterpiece in “Cowtown,” this from a guitarist who can be heard on albums by folks like Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, and Amy Grant. Reggie Young (Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”) shines at full luster on “Exit 209,” an easy listening number, and Ray Flacke smokes the fret board on “Templar Treasure.” The variety of tunes is obvious, but so is the immense amount of talent present here. All in all, Louie Shelton has produced a top-notch compilation of some of the best guitarists to gather on one album in quite some time. ~ Michael B. Smith, Rovi Performers: Bruce Watkins – Fiddle; Scott Sanders – Dobro; Bob Warren – Bass; Charlie Chadwick – Bass; Craig Nelson – Bass; Dave Francis – Bass; Dennis Belfield – Bass; Dug Grieves – Guitar; Duncan Mullins – Bass; Jimmy Carter – Bass; |

No Electric Guitars $15.18 This is a strong, rootsy collection of tunes, many with a distinctly alt-country sheen. The compilation is based on a great concept: Some top Philadelphia singer/songwriters were brought together to showcase their craft, with each also taking a crack at some cover songs. The motley crew of songwriters consists of Frank Brown (of power poppers Buzz Zeemer), Dave Bielanko (frontman for roots rockers Marah), Rich Kaufmann (the Rolling Hayseeds), Mike Brenner (John Train), and Gerry McGoldrick (Napalm Sunday and Emily Valentine). Highlights here include the countrified numbers “Out of Sorts” and “If I Were More Like You”; the Stonesy “Take My Place”; a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia,” recast here as honky tonk; and a stirring take on Gene Clark’s “Full Circle.” The only real missteps are the grating hick-hop of “One True Love” and a pointless, acoustic rendering of the Beach Boys’ instrumental “Pet Sounds.” ~ Erik Hage, Rovi |

Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. $7.18 Dwight Yoakam’s Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. began as an EP issued on the California Oak label. When Reprise signed him, they added four more tracks to the mix to round it out as an album. Yoakam, a Kentuckian, brought country music back into its own medium by reviving the classic Bakersfield sound with the help of his producer and lead guitarist, former Detroiter Pete Anderson. As a result, the “new traditionalist” movement was born, but Yoakam was always a cut or three above the rest, as this album displays in spades. Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. kicks off with a smoking cover of Johnny Horton’s “Honky Tonk Man,” a song now so closely associated with Yoakam, the original has all but been forgotten. But this is only the beginning. Yoakam’s own songs such as “Bury Me,” a duet with Maria McKee, and “South of Cincinnati” reference both the pastoral and dark sides of his native state. “South of Cincinnati” is a paean to those who left Kentucky for Ohio in search of jobs, and “Bury Me” celebrates the land itself. In addition, the title track, with Anderson’s Don Rich-influenced guitar style, walks the Buck Owens line until the line extends to Yoakam. With fiddles and backing vocals, Yoakam’s street poetry is both poignant and profound, built into a barroom anthem. In addition to this there is the gorgeous “Miner’s Prayer,” an acoustic number powered by dobro (courtesy of David Mansfield), flat-picked guitar, and Yoakam’s singing of his grandfather and generations like him who lived and died in the mines of Kentucky. Here Bill Monroe meets Ralph Stanley meets Bob Dylan. In the grain of Yoakam’s voice there isn’t one hint of irony, only empathy and raw emotion. Yoakam also does a more than acceptable version of June Carter’s “Ring of Fire,” the “Cherokee” of country music — meaning that if you can play it and pull it off, you’re taken seriously by the veterans. The album closes with the Harlan Howard classic “Heartaches by the Number.” Because of Ed Black’s steel playing, Brantley Kearns’ fiddle, and Anderson’s guitar, the accompaniment is stronger and far edgier than the Ray Price version, but from Yoakam’s throat comes an entirely different story than Price’s. In Price’s case the song was a plea; in Yoakam’s it’s a statement of fact. An astonishing debut, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. changed the face of country music single-handedly and remains one hell of a party record.~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Pete Anderson – 6-String Bass, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Bass); Brantley Kearns – Fiddle, Vocals (Background); David Mansfield – Dobro, Mandolin; Dwight Yoakam – Vocals (Background), Vocals, Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic); |

The Body Acoustic $6.38 Cyndi Lauper looks back at her hits on The Body Acoustic, with a number of guests including Adam Lazzara, Shaggy, Sarah McLachlan, Vivian Green, Ani DiFranco, and Jeff Beck. Conceptually, this looks like a disaster. Alanis Morissette did it as well and the results were mixed at best. But Lauper has always possessed a talent that goes beyond the material she has sung — and she can sing anything. The album is produced by Lauper with Rick Chertoff and William Wittman — who recorded and mixed the disc. Lauper’s band is a wide and varied assortment that includes contemporary jazz bassist Mark Egan. “Money Changes Everything,” with Lazzara, is a down-home calypso and country ramble. “All Through the Night,” with Shaggy, begins as an Appalachian folk tune until Shaggy begins toasting and Lauper shifts it into ballad gear. It’s a conflicting set of styles that’s held together in the genuine ache of her voice. “Time After Time” would be a beautiful song in anybody’s hands. Here, with McLachlan, she goes down into the tune’s lyrics and abandons the drama of the original for the intimacy of its words. The human heart becomes the interlocutor of memory and loss. Lauper and McLachlan trade verses as 12-strings, muted drums, and space define the place where lost love becomes the center of the question of devotion across time and space. “She Bop” is almost a blues song, and as a result it reveals deep eroticism as the pleasures and sweet release of masturbation fall from the singer’s voice like raw honey. And so it goes with “Above the Clouds,” as Beck’s trademark biting tone is juxtaposed against piano and space. This is a ballad that actually hurts. Its drama is realized in Lauper’s phrasing and Beck’s playing bites harder accentuating it — relaxed, slow, and deeply emotive. “Sisters of Avalon” features soul chanteuse Green and DiFranco. It’s funky as hell. Deep roiling bass pops and drones with acoustic guitars, fiddles, and a dulcimer moving through and around it. The drums fall just behind the beat as the singer goes for the crack in the lyrical spine of the track. The chorus-like refrain punches up its drama. Green takes her verse before an instrumental slide guitar interlude, and her wailing voice makes it among the album’s best. Lauper sings without friends on a number of cuts as well, such as the beautiful “Colors” and the stunning “Fearless.” This may be a slanted look at a greatest-hits package, but it comes off as an entirely new album full of adventure, grit, polish, and soul. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Beginner’s Guide to Fado $15.98 The United Kingdom’s Nascente imprint is well known for issuing wonderfully themed compilations either on genres or individual artists. Their Beginner’s Guide series is no exception, including this volume on the Portuguese music known as fado. Fado is a complex urban (i.e. “street”) folk music that deals with themes of destiny, betrayal in love, death, and despair, and is often regarded as the oldest tradition of its kind in the world. Indeed, by the early 20th century, fado, which had begun among the poor and visiting sailors in antiquity, had become a permanent fixture in Lisbon’s culture and has only grown in stature since that time all over the world. This three-CD set, in typical Nascente fashion, educates the listeners chronologically. Disc one is devoted to the traditional side of the music by some of its most renowned practitioners: Amália Rodrigues, Herminia Silva, Fernando Farinha, Carlos Do Carmo, and more. Disc two is entitled Fado Fusion. It documents the way the music’s roots melded with many modern elements, from dance music and electronic pop to rock & roll. The artists featured here include Lura, Liana, Ciganos d’Ouro (whose fusion includes Sephardic, tango, flamenco, and even Arab musics), the Lisbon City Rockers, Dany Silva, V Imperio, and Citania. But it’s the last disc that is most fascinating. Entitled Fado Now, it features current artists on the scene who have taken the music back in a sense, by incorporating far more of its original acoustic roots in its sound. The artists included on this disc include the wondrously talented “voice” of modern fado, Ana Moura, Deolinda, the Cinema Ensemble/Rodrigo Leão, and Jorge Fernando, to name a few. While disc two is admittedly tough going for those who love the traditional music, it is necessary for inclusion in order to provide an accurate recorded portrait of fado and its evolution. Compiled expertly by Alex Robinson, this is ultimately a complex, labyrinthine, and engaging aural treat. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

You’ll hear these shrill vocals, thunderous folk rhythms, crunchy guitars and ramshackle string sections blaring out of radios and televisions in most of the Third World, from Indonesian taxi cabs to Kenyan bars to Mumbai restaurants. It’s the music that greeted the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan. It’s the sound of Bollywood and it’s the most popular music in the world. Performers: Amit Kumar – Vocals; Asha Bhosle – Vocals; Bappi Lahiri – Vocals; Geeta Dutt – Vocals; Kishore Kumar – Vocals; Lata Mangeshkar – Vocals; Mahendra Kapoor – Vocals; Meena Kapoor – Vocals; Mohammed Rafi – Vocals; Nandu Bhende – Vocals; Nitin Mukesh – Vocals; Salma Agha – Vocals; Usha Iyer – Vocals; Usha Uthup – Vocals; Vijay Benedict – Vocals |

Make Your Own Acoustic Guitar $37.82 Every aspect of the task of building a guitar is dealt with in a clear, helpful, and often humorous style that dispenses with much of the folklore of guitar-making and explains how to do the job in simple, easy-to-understand terms. Each step is fully illustrated with photos of the five guitars made especially for the book. An in-depth look at the processes used in the Martin guitar factory describes how major manufacturers solve similar problems and reveals how their methods can be adapted for home workshop use.
