The Unspoken Mystery Behind Acoustic Guitar Strings
Fundamentally, acoustic guitar strings have been around longer than any other type of guitar string. They have evolved into one of the most critical components of the acoustic scene. Technology has taken the tone capabilities of the acoustic guitar string to new levels. There are many choices, sometimes leaving musicians confused at times. We are going to discuss one aspect of acoustic guitar strings in this writing…Metal.
It’s about metal…
What makes an acoustic guitar string different than electric guitar strings? Metal. Electric guitar strings utilize ferromagnetic metals, namely steel, to allow the pickup to sense it. Electric Guitar Pickups are based on variable reluctance technology. They rely on a magnetic field to be interrupted by a metal target (aka. Guitar string). The interruption is in the form of a vibration from the string. Acoustic guitar strings do not need ferromagnetic metals. Amplification is often not a focus of the acoustic guitar. Strings with clarity, brilliance and volume are preferred. The technology used to amplify an acoustic guitar does not rely upon strings having ferromagnetic properties. Transducing an acoustic guitar is more about picking up a signal via piezo effects, or sound pressure being picked up by a microphone. This opens up the door to a wider variety of string selections.
There are many different flavors that acoustic guitar strings come in these days. A series of alloys exist at the most basic level. Interestingly, I find players of all ages and experience who do not know the differences in string metals. Some have a rough idea, while some have no idea. Copper, zinc and tin are metals seldom discussed by guitarist. As soon as a number like 92/8 or 80/20 is mentioned in reference to alloy sets, bewilderment can start. If you are thinking, “Yeah, what the hell do those numbers mean to my tone?” You are about to find out. So, without further delay, here is a guided tour!
The Acoustic String Metal Guide
Bronze – Of all the strings manufactured, bronze has got to be the brightest and most articulate string available. There are no strings that are “pure” bronze, per say, but a mix of several different alloys including tin-phosphor, zinc and copper. The core is usually made of steel. Bronze strings can make virtually any acoustic guitar come alive with highly penetrating tone, versus their steel string counterparts. Bronze metal is known for its shimmer and brassy sound, but a deep rich low end can also be attained. Since string coatings have become popular, many of the previously highly corrosive bronze sets have become popular again. Uncoated bronze sets can lose their brilliance after a few hours of playing, as they can be highly corrosive. Many players used to use them for recording sessions for their short lived brassy sound. String coatings in general, have pumped new life into acoustic bronze sets. The brassy sound can last for many weeks, or months, without decaying.
80/20 Bronze – Here is one of those numbers we mentioned earlier. What does 80/20 mean? It is the ratio of copper to zinc in the wrap wire. The wrap wire is 80% copper while the other 20% is zinc. Since copper is highly corrosive, the zinc component helps slows down the aging process and adds additional hardness. However, since the advent of string coatings, the corrosion issue has all but disappeared as a primary concern. Although, poorly coated 80/20 strings, or strings with worn away coating will corrode. Tone wise, the 80/20 mix is excellent for creating a string that yields fantastic tonal range. The 80/20 strings are known for their brilliance and crisp highs. Uncoated versions of this string can lose brilliance after a few hours of playing sessions. In fact, this string has gotten a bad rap over the years for being “dead” sounding due to its high corrosion rate. Super old sets exposed to high humidity can turn light green from the copper content. Again, coating technologies have completely changed this factor.
85/15 Bronze – This string has a tonal spectrum in between an 80/20 bronze and a phosphor bronze string. It retains much of the brilliance found in an 80/20 bronze but captures the warmth and fullness of phosphor bronze strings. The 85/15 was the initial development of the more popular 80/20. However, 85/15 still remains a popular choice for finger style playing. It helps add volume to finger style articulation and give clarity similar to a plectrum.
Phosphor Bronze – The phosphor bronze strings were developed to have a longer lasting life cycle. In other words, the phosphorus content helped preserve the brilliant tone longer than the 80/20 and 80/15 bronze strings. Phosphor bronze strings are the darkest sounding of the bronze string family. They have about 75-80% the brilliance of a fresh set of 80/20 bronze. Phosphor adds a warm pleasing tone that give a tonal softness not found in other strings. They tend to have a little less “pick noise” as a plectrum sweeps across the strings. In fact, some sets have been known to yield a soft “brushing” type of pick noise.
92/8 Phosphor Bronze – The 92/8 is a ratio represents a blend of 92% copper and 8% tin phosphide in the wrap wire. The 8% actually breakdown to a 7% tin and 1% phosphor composition. The tin phosphide helps preserve the tonal range over time. Again, since the advent of coatings, the role of phosphor in coated string is purely tone versus longevity.
Gold Plated – In an effort to prevent corrosion, some strings utilize a micro layer of gold plating on the wrap wire. The gold plating gives a less brighter sound than the non-plated 80/20 bronze string sets and non-plated phosphor bronze sets. The gold is often plated on 80/20 bronze wrap wire and phosphor bronze sets. The gold plating is a good alternative for players who feel the poly-resin coating on strings impact string performance.
Titanium – Acoustic string sets based on titanium compositions and cores have been cited for their corrosion resistance abilities. The non-ferromagnetic properties of titanium strings inherently put them in the acoustic class of strings. The tonal range of titanium is somewhere between steel and bronze sets with a very unique sounding clarity and richness. Titanium is a bit of an exotic metal and can be over thirty times the cost of stainless steel.
Stainless Steel – Stainless steel strings bring their own tonal uniqueness to the acoustic world. Their high tension requirements make them less friendly to acoustic designs, but still give exceptional performance. Steel give a much softer sound with less volume than their bronze counterparts. They make a good choice for the hard strumming, open style chord players. Players on a budget will appreciate their availability in low price points. In addition, their stainless properties give them good corrosion resistance.
Silk Steel – Don’t own a Classical Guitar? No problem. For players seeking the soft sound of classical guitar strings, silk steel strings deliver the classical tonal range. This string is constructed of a center wrap of silk with a steel winding. The combination of silk and steel bring a classical tone to finger-style players wanting to keep their traditional dreadnaught or concert auditorium acoustic guitar. Unlike classical strings, the silk steel strings come with a ball end to anchor in a bridge made for metal strings.
We have covered a lot of ground here. As you can see, there are a bunch of options for alloys in the acoustic string world. Hopefully, this overview has provided enough insight to let you know the differences between the various alloys.

…As It Never Was $15.98 The more musical and nuanced bands in extreme metal do not live by volume and brute force alone. Those are the bands that have enough going on melodically and harmonically that they would still sound good even if they opted to unplug and perform in an acoustic environment — which, in fact, is exactly what Eluveitie did when they recorded Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion in late 2008. Minus the crunching metal guitar they usually favor, Eluveitie provided an acoustic-oriented folk-rock album that wasn’t as heavy or hard-driving as their other releases, but was quite edgy nonetheless. Everything Remains (As It Never Was), however, marks their return to full-fledged metal, and the blend of forcefulness and musicality that served them well on previous electric albums also serves them well this time. The Swiss folk metal/melodic death metal unit’s interest in Medieval and Celtic music goes beyond the superficial; it is an integral part of what Eluveitie does. So on Everything Remains (As It Never Was), bruising metal guitar, thrashiness, and death metal-growling vocals are right at home with flutes, pipes, whistles, and other instruments traditionally used in European folk. This is an excellent CD that manages to be dark, menacing, and enchanting at the same time. Granted, Eluveitie’s blend of death metal and Euro-folk elements won’t appeal to death metal purists, but for those who do appreciate folk metal, Everything Remains (As It Never Was) is exactly what the Medieval doctor ordered. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

…Tick…Tick…Tick $15.98 Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is. The swirling beauty that rises in the middle of the track transforms the protagonist’s voice, as if by … |

01011001 $19.98 With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built a career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has sung for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-the Gathering), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Hansi K? rsch (Blind Guardian), Simone Simons (Epica), Ty Tabor (King’s X), and Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), among many others. These singers are the focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they’re merely characters in Lucassen’s rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic called “the longest CD ever made.” Indeed, the album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It’s a perfect fit for the Inside/Out label — pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in “Waking Dreams,” he entirely forgoes bass in favor of a percolating ostinato that suggests a beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade the percussion; “Beneath the Waves” is as if Alan Parsons covered the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn’t actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center (or its Dutch equivalent); the record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact “Web of Lies.” These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity’s disconnect with itself and destruction of the planet. But that’s really not important. Music this over the top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world’s tallest building. It doesn’t care; it just goes on and on. ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi |

1,000 Kisses $9.99 Patty Griffin’s third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it’s sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cin? ma v? rit? mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album’s production style is subtle, it’s also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of “Chief” to the Latin romanticism of “Mil Besos” to the torchy late-night blues of “Tomorrow Night” without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1,000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer (her version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Stolen Car” actually improves on “the Boss”‘ original), and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow’s lament “Making Pies” and the moody lead-off track “Rain.” And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin’s voice — a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability — remains a wonder to behold. 1,000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don’t have to wait four years for the follow-up. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

1000 Years of Popular Music $28.98 As the year 2000 loomed on the horizon, Playboy Magazine took it upon itself to ask a number of leading musicians to name the greatest songs of the soon-to-be-completed millennium. One of the musos queried was Richard Thompson, and while many of his comrades couldn’t be bothered to go further back than 1940 in their overview of musical history, the scholarly Thompson took the notion seriously enough to extend his own list of notable songs as far back as 1068 A.D. While Playboy never ended up printing Thompson’s list, the notion made enough of an impression on him that he put together a special show in which he guided his audience through his own version of the greatest hits of the past ten centuries. 1000 Years of Popular Music is culled from recordings of Thompson’s concert series of the same name, and beyond the novelty value of the set list (from the oldest round in the English language to Britney Spears in a mere 76 minutes!), it also offers a rare look at Thompson the interpretive musician, as well as lends a fascinating perspective on his musical influences. As one might expect, the early innings are dominated by the British folk tradition, with “King Henry V’s Conquest of France” and “Blackleg Miner” suggesting where Thompson’s melodic sense first took root, and other tunes demonstrating how operetta and the British music halls absorbed and refined similar themes. Thompson also indulges his passion for classic jazz of the 1930s and ’40s on some Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong chestnuts, and wraps up by following rock & roll through Jerry Lee Lewis, the Who, and the Beatles to Prince and Britney Spears (“Oops! I Did It Again,” of which Thompson writes, “Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song”). Considering that precious few of these songs were meant to be performed by a solo acoustic guitar, Thompson’s arrangements are inventive and effective; whether he’s going for laughs or drama, he gets the most from his material. (He’s also fortunat… |

12 Angry Months $12.99 Scott Lucas of Local H is far from the first musician to find inspiration in a bad romantic breakup, and he’s just one of many who has written a whole album about losing someone who was once the girl of his dreams, but the group’s seventh full-length album, 12 Angry Months, is their most ambitious and adventurous work to date, finding new musical avenues to express the many emotions that emerge in the wake of a busted relationship. 12 Angry Months opens with an unusually subdued acoustic guitar and piano prelude before the electric guitars kick in and Lucas and his ex battle over how to divvy up their mutual friends and the CD collection (“Where’s all my Kyuss records? You never liked ‘em until you met me!”), and though Lucas delivers plenty of his trademark meat-and-potatoes hard rock guitar on this album, he also shows a greater willingness to explore other textures. “White Belt Boys” and “Taxi-Cabs” flirt with minor-key Eastern modes (though they seem to be drawn from Led Zeppelin rather than a new interest in world music), “The Summer of Boats” and “Simple Pleas” are rare examples of “power ballads” that sound heartfelt and dramatic rather than maudlin, the sarcastic pop accents lurking below of the surface of “Jesus Christ! Did You See the Size of That Sperm Whale?” add to its bite, and the epic-scaled closer, “Hand to Mouth,” achieves a fitting sonic grandeur. Lyrically, 12 Angry Months runs the emotional gamut of post-breakup resentment, from ranking out on your ex’s new boyfriend (“BMW Man”), wishing misery upon her and her friends (“White Belt Boys”) and bitter resignation that the affair was doomed to failure (“Twenty-Four Hour Breakup Session”) to self-loathing (“Jesus Christ! Did You See…”), foolishly pondering another chance (“Blur”), and clumsily moving on (“Taxi-Cabs”). 12 Angry Months is often funny but just as often cuts deep enough to sting for anyone who has ever has a less-than-graceful breakup (i.e. nearly everyb… |

12 Crass Songs $15.98 While in the minds of many punk rock was supposed to be about upending the rules and assumptions that had come to govern rock & roll in the mid-’70s, punk also helped revive the ranting spirit that had informed the best political music and art through the 20th century, from the Situationalists to the Fugs. Among the first wave of British punks, none ranted with greater ferocity and sense of purpose than Crass, who actually were the anarchist firebrands the Sex Pistols pretended to be, though the brutal report of their music was rarely as impressive or as intelligent as their lyrics. Crass were massively influential during their 1977-1984 lifespan and beyond, both as musicians and as activists, and Jeffrey Lewis’ 12 Crass Songs is a surprising example of just how far their ideas have reached. Best known for his witty anti-folk tunes, musician and cartoonist Lewis first heard Crass while he was a college freshman in 1993, and the blunt wit and angry idealism of their songs made a powerful impression on him. As he began performing, Lewis began looking for ways to merge the fury of Crass’ broadsides with his acoustic-based music and he recorded some lo-fi interpretations of some of their tunes in his bedroom. A few years later, Lewis’ efforts have grown into 12 Crass Songs, in which Lewis and a handful of friends (most notably vocalist Helen Schreiner) have taken a dozen tunes by Crass and married them to arrangements that give them a far more melodic spin than they revealed in their original form. While electric guitars pop up here and there (and take center stage on “Big A, Little A”), most of 12 Crass Songs is dominated by acoustic guitar and Lewis’ sweet, slightly nasal vocals, but while he has succeeded in making these songs sound pretty and playful in a way they never were before, he’s also managed to carry forth their message with a surprising accuracy. It was often difficult to understand what Crass were bellowing about on The Feeding of the 5000 or Station… |

12 Gauge $14.98 As one of heavy metal’s most popular subgenres, melodic death metal has seemingly had every possible angle covered, but Finland’s Kalmah have arguably challenged that assumption with their late-? 00s efforts, after striking upon a style enhanced by an unconventional blend of serrated thrash riffing and swirling synthesizers. This blend is once again showcased in impressive fashion by the group’s sixth full-length, 12 Gauge, which, if anything, is even more aggressive than its immediate predecessors, on the strength of raging moshers like “Bullets Are Blind,” “Hook the Monster” and “Godeye.” Yes, those aforementioned keyboards continuously shadow the frenzied guitar action (notably on “One of Fail”), and Antti Kokko’s inspired solos and occasional acoustic intros see (“Rust Never Sleeps,” the title track) bring frequent melodic contrasts to the table, but brutality ultimately reigns supreme as the dominating emotion here. Actually, even vocalist Pekka Kokko seems to put a little more “GRRR” into his growls this time around, and he certainly digs deeper in his bowels than on Kalmah’s most recent release, 2008′s For the Revolution, to help give the band’s more extreme-minded supporters exactly what they wish for with this excellent album. [The Japanese edition of 12 Gauge also featured a cover of Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat."] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi |

1963 Isn’t 1962 $16.98 Bukka White was “rediscovered” — alive and well, despite rumors that he’d died a violent death sometime after his last official recording session in 1940 — by blues enthusiasts John Fahey and Ed Denson. These live tapes, made late that year by Fahey and Denson, were among the first tangible results of that rediscovery. This older cousin to B.B. King still had all of his stuff — he was only in his mid-50s, and unlike a lot of older bluesmen who were well past their primes for the ’60s blues revival, he could still play and sing up a storm. Indeed, he was playing faster and more precise in 1963 than he was in 1940, and his slide work shimmers and glistens throughout this CD, and the voice is superb as well. Opening with “Streamline Special,” he goes through a dazzling display of repertory, sounding like two or three players at once as he works the strings, playing lead and rhythm simultaneously on his acoustic guitar, in pieces running anywhere from a minute and a half to eight minutes or more. King has admitted trying to recreate White’s sound in his own electric playing, but these tapes show just how much of a losing battle that was, against this acoustic guitar virtuoso. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |

200 Years $15.98 200 Years? self-titled debut is a bare-boned folk-pop album that avoids frills and instead relies on subtlety. The duo is left completely vulnerable in this tranquil set of songs, which sound as if they were performed on a back porch at twilight, instead of in a studio. The tempo plods along at a snail? s pace, and the mood remains delicate throughout as Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) strums his acoustic guitar and Elisa Ambrogio (of Magik Markers) barely projects her pretty, waifish voice. Occasionally some ambience creeps in (an electric guitar drone, an accordion hum, a pipe organ, some cymbal splashes, or background vocals) from the deep distance, but otherwise, a less-is-more approach keeps the acoustic guitar and vocal lullabies sounding intimate. 200 Years is as subtle as they come and makes for excellent background music, especially if you’re feeling fragile. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi |

3 Rounds and a Sound $9.99 Is Blind Pilot a folk outfit playing indie rock or indie rockers playing folk music? Singer/guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski operate out of an acoustic setting but their mellow yet hooky tunes have more in common with indie rock outfits than folky troubadours. This Portland, OR-based group winds up being something like Beck or the Shins doing easygoing folksy tunes or Iron & Wine with a poppier sensibility. Whatever genre equation you want to use to describe them, it’s easy to say that Blind Pilot have come up with a winning music plan. The opening tune “Oviedo” sets the course that they chart throughout the debut full-length. Against some laid-back guitar strumming and gentle drumming, Nebeker warmly sings his hazy but quirky lyrics, which seem like private language of personal confessions (“Four times is once too much for luck and that’s how many times the clock struck/I wandered home saying your name”). As the song easies along, the arrangement gets fleshed out with muted horns and banjo picking. Nebeker nicely doubles his voice at times, but his singing maintains his intimate, hushed tones. In “Paint or Pollen,” he builds a set of beguiling images (“Milk in your water, black in your primer, wood in your brush”) to express that “the best is upon us.” While having an interesting way with words, Nebeker isn’t one for direct sentiment. He is a bit more overt in his affection on the title track, where he sings “My eyes were dark ’till you woke me.” While “The Bitter End” deals with death, it doesn’t dip heavily in morbidity as Nebeker expresses his emotions through personal but semi-obscure references to “hounds-tooth coats and vitamins.” For all of its off-the-cuff musical vibe, Blind Pilot also exhibits a fine sense of craftsmanship. The vibraphone that weaves through “One Red Thread” subtly expands the song’s sonic landscape while subdued horns show up again to bolster the woozy melody in “I Buried a Bone.” “Two Towns fro… |

31 Fiddle Favorites $9.99 These 31 fiddle tunes and breakdowns were recorded during an all-night session in the mid-’60s with an all-acoustic combo of dobro, guitar, bass, and Fiddlin’ Mutt Poston’s fiddle. Mixing traditional fiddle tunes and folk songs with an occasional Western swing number (“Take Me Back to Tulsa”) or Tin Pan Alley favorite (“Alabama Jubilee”), Poston’s nimble sawing and sturdy accompaniment make for a solid showcase that is sure to please enthusiasts of country fiddlin’ and old-timey instrumental music. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi |

3D $17.98 When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. This is fun music that will probably offend a few traditionalists while letting everyone else know that the old music can grow in exciting and unpredictable ways. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi |

4 Women No Cry, Vol. 1 $15.99 Released by the excellent Monika label, this compilation — planned to be the first in a series — has a concept summed up in the title: four women from different countries, all known for working in electronic/dance styles, each contributing a slew of songs. Everyone’s tracks are grouped together, so the end result is more like a collection of four EPs, but the transitions between the artists are smoothly managed and the end result is a fine showcase for all four. Argentina’s Rosario Blefari begins the album, her “Partir y Renunciar” starting as a murky drone before adding a clattering, hollow beat and dub bass as the setting for her gentle singing and a touch of acoustic guitar. It’s a sharp blend that emphasizes the electronics first and foremost, as her other songs like “Nunca,” a slow, moody piece, and the concluding collage of beats and loops, “Vidriera Chilena,” make clear. Georgia’s Tusia Beridze follows with a series of six short, understated compositions, building on her earlier work well in its range from gentle chorales with whispered counterpoints (“Gorod”) to minimal torch songs (“Cuet”) and IDM cut-ups (“Late”). The sequence has the feeling of a late-night soundtrack to a cityscape, and works very well as a whole as well as song for song. Frenchwoman Eglantine Gouzy parallels Beridze in presenting six short pieces for her contribution, with the initial “Eglantine Longe” almost sounding like an extension of Beridze’s work. “Nurse Song” changes the tone with Gouzy’s semi-whispered/gasped singing and meditative blend of keyboards and what sounds a bit like harp, with the remainder of her work suggesting a vocal-added version of Boards of Canada’s playful explorations. Catarina Pratter brings the comp home to Germany at the end, alternating between shorter and longer tracks. The standout is “Dreamin of Love,” which sets a grumbling industrial buzz and steady beats underneath subtle, wistful vocals to create what could almost be a moder… |

? ???? $14.99 Ang? lique Kidjo was born in Cotonou, Benin, but like many modern African artists, she’s gone her own way, using traditional music to forge her own personal hybrid of African, European, and American pop. On this album Kidjo pays tribute to the people who inspired her career, including her mother, Miriam Makeba, and American R&B artists like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Otis Redding. And while the tunes Kidjo tackles may be familiar, her arrangements turn them inside out and shed new light on their African roots. “Cold Sweat” gets a take that salutes the Afro-beat of Fela Kuti, who used Brown’s funk for his own music. The rhythm-heavy track swings like mad, with Kidjo’s powerful vocal climbing the scale and weaving in and around the backbeat. She bases her version of “Mbube” (better known in the U.S. as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”) on the singing of Makeba, and uses the original Zulu lyrics. A simple acoustic guitar and percussion arrangement gives Kidjo room to show off her impressive range and emotional skill. Kidjo used to make up words to the American songs she couldn’t understand, and sings Yoruba lyrics to Otis Redding’s “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember.” Its Memphis-meets-Cotonou approach is intensified by the female backing vocalists and Kidjo’s wailing high end. Bollywood tunes were also a big part of Kidjo’s upbringing. On “Dil Main Chuppa Ke Pyar Ka,” a hit by Mohammed Rafi, Steve Gorn drops a flute solo that recalls a Zulu pennywhistle into a Congolese rhythm track. Kidjo’s originals include “Kelele,” a sprightly highlife tune, and “Afia,” a re-Africanized samba written with Brazilian guitarist Vinicius Cantuaria. ~ j. poet, Rovi |

A Boy Named Goo $9.99 Produced by Lou Giordano with his trademark full-bodied, immediately accessible, but never washed-out sound, A Boy Named Goo finally got the band across to a wide audience, and deservedly so. Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash’s OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling — “Long Way Down” is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik’s singing the not-so-secret weapon. Hearing him on the descending chorus, matching the just sad enough guitar crunch, makes one realize that there’s always hope for full-bodied rock & roll. The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever — the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik’s a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly. Takac similarly has his own sonic improvements, his formerly rasped high register now just a little more controlled but no less affecting, as winners like “Burnin’ Up” and “Somethin’ Bad” easily demonstrate. Rzeznik-sung highlights are equally everywhere — the commercial but never stupid “Naked,” with a great chorus and immediately radio-friendly music, the equally sharp “Only One,” and the mighty fine “Ain’t That Unusual.” There’s no question what the highlight is, though — however untypical of the rest of the album’s mid-range feedback fun, “Name,” with its sweet but sad acoustic arrangement, made perfect sense as the Goos’ long-delayed radio breakthrough. Rzeznik’s empathetic vocal, delivering one of his best lyrics on favored subjects of friendship, loss, and fame, matches unfolky strumming and quiet energy, creating a song that feels like both a farewell to the American Dream and to a long-lost partner. All this without sounding a Bruce Springsteen sermon — a rare thing indeed. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

A Drug Problem That Never Existed $16.98 Between Mondo Generator’s debut, 2000′s Cocaine Rodeo, and their sophomore effort, 2003′s A Drug Problem That Never Existed, the stakes had been raised considerably. Leader Nick Oliveri’s main gig, Queens of the Stone Age, had finally broken on through to the mainstream with their stellar 2002 effort, Songs for the Deaf, so expectations for Drug Problem definitely ran high. But with a stellar supporting cast that contained much of the QOTSA posse (Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Joey Castillo, etc.) and equipped with a strong set of raw, Mot? rhead-worthy material, Oliveri hit the nail right on the head. If you’re expecting an album as diverse as the average QOTSA release, you may be disappointed. But if it’s an album chock-full of the aggro punk metal that became Oliveri’s trademark on R and Songs for the Deaf (“Tension Head,” “Six Shooter,” etc.), then you’re in luck, as evidenced by such standouts as “Here We Come,” “So High, So Low,” and “F.Y. I’m Free.” That said, Oliveri does sneak in a surprise or two, such as the acoustic guitar-based, Wild West-sounding “All I Can Do” and “Detroit,” a heartfelt tribute to Oliveri’s late grandfather. But the best is saved for last, as ex-Screaming Trees/part-time QOTSA frontman Mark Lanegan guests on the poignant album closer, “Four Corners.” A Drug Problem That Never Existed proves once and for all that there’s much more to Oliveri than merely being a bass player. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

A Friend of a Friend $15.98 Ironically, the most telling line on Dave Rawlings’ first album as a frontman comes from one of the few tracks he didn’t write. On his version of the Bright Eyes song Method Acting, imagine a more direct explanation of A Friend of a Friend’s genesis. Singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Rawlings has worked with Bright Eyes and Old Crow Medicine Show in the past, and members of both bands return the favor by appearing here, but of course he’s best-known for being Gillian Welch’s musical foil throughout her career. After a decade-and-a-half spent as the shadowy figure in the background, chiming in with those reedy harmonies and concise guitar licks on demand, Rawlings is long overdue for this solo debut. While he has hidden light under a proverbial bushel, he hasn’t been concealing any unexpected predilections — the overall approach here is pretty much in line with that of the albums he’s made with Welch, which makes sense, considering that he was the producer on half of those. The biggest difference is a slightly more expanded sonic palette, a result of Rawlings bringing his aforementioned buddies on board, in addition to Tom Petty’s ivory-tickler Benmont Tench and of course, longtime singing partner Welch. But even though a string section pops up on a couple of tunes, A Friend of a Friend is essentially a low-key, acoustic-based Americana outing that feels more like a 21st century version of the early-? 70s Laurel Canyon cowboy aesthetic than anything else. The old, new, borrowed and blue song selection is balanced to present a quintessential picture of where Rawlings is coming from; he tackles Ryan Adams and Old Crow tunes he co-wrote, covers cohorts Bright Eyes as well as inspirations Neil Young and Jesse Fuller, and rounds things out with a batch of new Rawlings/Welch compositions. And while he doesn’t exactly adopt an in-your-face approach to the leading-man role, preferring to become part of the powerful collective he’s assembled, Rawlings proves himself f… |

A Good Day $17.98 Jessica Molaskey is a seasoned Broadway performer who also makes a strong impression in tackling classics from the Great American Songbook or reviving pop songs of the 1940s. Her expressive vocals are effective without resorting to gimmickry, and she’s backed by a sterling cast of musicians which includes guitarist John Pizzarelli (her husband and the arranger of seven of the songs), father-in-law Bucky Pizzarelli on acoustic guitar, brother-in-law and bassist Martin Pizzarelli, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, and pianist Ray Kennedy, among others. “All the Cats Join In” was made popular by Benny Goodman but has been only sporadically recorded since; Molaskey not only swings it effortlessly but expands upon its original lyrics. Her treatment of a trio of songs written by Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour (another singer/guitarist married couple), especially the cheerful “A Good Day,” will help anyone lose the blues. Molaskey’s lyrics in the five pieces written with her spouse are priceless, here’s an example from “How Come You Ain’t Got Me?”: “You buy one ticket and you win the lotto…you down martinis, other folks get blotto.” And it’s impossible not to be charmed by their lovely ballad “The Girl with His Smile and My Eyes,” dedicated to their daughter Madeline Pizzarelli, with the sole accompaniment provided by Kennedy’s lush piano. Every track on this highly recommended CD is a gem. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi |

A Little Bit of Somethin’ $13.98 Tommy Guerrero’s A Little Bit of Something sounds like the former skate punk has been listening to a whole lot of mid-period Beastie Boys albums. It’s not the in-your-face rhymes or punk-based aggression that’s influenced him, but the group’s canny mix of samples and new music that blends influences from all kinds of unexpected, offbeat places. (Tracks like the languid, groovy “Four TRK Samba” also suggest that Guerrero has a full complement of Cornelius albums.) These brief instrumentals — 15 tracks in 39 minutes! — ignore the drone and ambient schools of electronica and post-rock in favor of a magpie-like interest in variety and novelty. This makes the songs on the aptly titled A Little Bit of Something wonderfully varied and never tiresome. (The sounds even change within songs, such as the way “So Blue It’s Black” starts out as a duet for acoustic guitar and vinyl noise but then eases into mellow, ’70s-style fusion.) This is an enchanting, fascinating album. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

A Place to Land [Bonus Tracks] $18.99 Little Big Town scored big with its second album, 2005′s The Road to Here, thanks to the chart topping single “Gone.” Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet’s meld rootsy contemporary country with acoustic and electric instruments and vocal harmonies inspired by Fleetwood Mac proved irresistible. A Place to Land is superior to its predecessor in every way: production feels more organic, the music is more sophisticated, and the lyrics more poignant. Perhaps the real secret to the success of this quartet is its secret weapon in behind-the-boards fifth member Wayne Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick is the band’s producer and songwriting partner. He’s chief guitar picker, and plays just about anything with strings, as well as the clavinet and B-3. If the sound on The Road to Here is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s glory years, A Place to Land drinks deeply from the well of the entire Southern California scene from the mid- to late ’70s. It’s not all regurgitation either. Little Big Town’s sound is rooted deeply in traditional, organic country music. Their songs meld seamlessly with the vocal harmonies that evoke vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Eagles earliest records. While the album’s opener, “Fine Line,” literally rings with Lindsey Buckingham’s chord progressions, choruses, and arranged vocals (? la “Go Your Own Way”); it’s open rock & roll territory with one exception: the verse structure has enough hard country to rise above that influence. They distinguish themselves a bit more on the album’s road-weary first single, “I’m with the Band.” Its beautifully paced B-3, electric guitars, and big cracking drums, Dobro, banjos, and mandolin are woven into a beautiful road song. The Eagles get melody-checked in “That’s Where I’ll Be,” but the harmonies here could only be better if Bernie Leadon and Timothy B. Schmit joined in for six-part harmony. The acoustic guitars rise and fall, keeping a steady rhythmic chatter that serv… |

A Raining Sun of Light and Love $16.98 Brooklyn-based, semi-instrumental quartet Titan have been unleashing their unholy blend of neo-psychedelic rock and progressive stoner metal on homemade EPs (CD-R basement freakouts) for some time now, so the arrival of a full-length studio album is a cause for celebration. Like Boris, Comets on Fire, and Blue Cheer, Titan don’t concern themselves with genre boundaries. Heavily improvised cacophony can often become the audio equivalent of a traffic jam, but in the right hands it can transcend the endless line of cars and take the listener home by unforeseen paths. A Raining Sun of Light and Love achieves this through the twisted hands and minds of its creators (these guys can actually play), and once you get past the Comus-inspired acoustic intro that’s oddly reminiscent of Ween’s “Squelch the Weasel,” the 45 minutes that follow traverse the annals of rock history like a roller coaster car with a grenade in it. Fat ELP organ runs explode into heavy Sabbath riffing while Rush-inspired time signatures signal the arrival of “Careful with That Axe Eugene”-era Pink Floyd. Feedback washes over Tuvan throat singing, roadside noise morphs into crickets, and bluesy slide guitar and wall upon wall of distortion fall on each of the four tracks like a monsoon, signaling the arrival of one of the most promising metal acts of 2007. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean $9.99 While it still lies much closer to Nashville than Key West (like in the boisterous slide guitar solo that lights up “The Great Filling Station Holdup”), Jimmy Buffett’s A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean does begin to delineate the blowsy, good-timin’ Key West persona that would lead him to summer tour stardom and the adoration of millions of drinking buddies everywhere. “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Railroad Lady,” and “Grapefruit — Juicy Fruit” rightly became crowd pleasers. But Buffett reveals himself a storyteller with the touching sigh of “He Went to Paris,” where a slide guitar appears again to lend a subtle gleam to the arrangement, or in the gorgeous, sweetly sad tale of a passed-away poet’s unlikely posthumous success. It’s in this wide-eyed honesty, as well as the winking sarcasm of the scrambling honky tonker “Peanut Butter Conspiracy” — “We never took more than we could eat/And we always swore if we ever got rich, we’d pay the mini mart back” — that Buffett’s flair for easygoing accessibility really emerges. White Sport Coat has to be considered country and western music; its rambling acoustic guitars, twinges of harmonica, fiddle, and peddle steel will do that. But Buffett himself was a Nashville outcast almost from the beginning, and his southward migration began with this album. “I don’t want fame that brings confusion,” he sings in “My Lovely Lady,” and declares his desire to get out of the Music City rat race for the more temperate climes and crab meat of the Florida Keys. Once there, the songwriting ingredients drifting through White Sport Coat and other early LPs caught the Caribbean breeze and really took off. This is highly recommended for Buffett completists and those interested in his more introspective side. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |
